The Student Government Association (SGA) was created, in part, in response to Legislative Code 54.503: Student Services Fees. The Code states that “The president of each institution shall duly consider the recommendations of a student fee advisory committee.” SGA members may serve on the Student Fee Advisory Committee as well as the SGA Finance Committee. SGA members are also the communication link between students and the MVC administration. In addition, SGA works closely with the Office of Student Life (OSL) on annual program and activity planning. SGA voices concerns and ideas relative to student success at Mountain View College. The MVC SGA is a proud member of the statewide Texas Junior College Student Government Association (TJCSGA).
The purpose of Mountain View College’s Student Government Association is to promote unity and cooperation among students, faculty, and administrators; to widen the network among SGA members; and to heighten student body awareness of the Institution’s procedures and policies. SGA is composed of selected and volunteer students from Mountain View College. SGA officers are non-compensated volunteers. Officers hold positions for one year and are elected by the student body each fall. The president of SGA meets with the College President’s team on a routine basis.
SGA members have achieved many goals on behalf of students. Requests by students are taken seriously, and students presently enjoy SGA contributions like ATM machines on campus, student identification cards, book exchange boards, new lockers and better lighting on school grounds and parking lots.
SGA activity funds are derived through various means. The Office of Student Life provides most of the funding for trips and official business functions. To raise extra money, the association sponsors events such as bake sales, car washes, and food and drink booths.
Any currently enrolled MVC student interested in participating in SGA is welcome to attend an SGA meeting. Past meeting information can be obtained by calling or dropping by the Office of Student Life at Mountain View College. Students must meet the following criteria to become voting members:
