El Centro Club Wins Food Fight Against Hunger

This article appeared in a December 2017 issue of the student newsletter.

For the third year in a row, the El Centro College Chapter of Sigma Alpha Lambda (SAL) has won the annual Food Fight Against Hunger! The service event brings together SAL chapters from across the nation in a spirited, but friendly, competition. The goal: to collect the most nonperishable food items and donations for local food banks.

Sizing Up The Competition

The competition is based on chapter size, dividing participants into small, medium and large chapters. El Centro College SAL is considered a small chapter (0-150 members); however, its chapter members collected more than 600 food items, which is more than the winners in the large chapter (251+ members) category! This is especially impressive considering El Centro College SAL was the only SAL chapter representing a two-year college.

How They Did It

SAL President Faith Akinmade, the SAL executive board and members, OSL Student Leadership Coordinator Curtis Lee, and club advisors Destiney Tolbert-Jackson and Shanee’ Moore served as leaders for the Food Fight Against Hunger at El Centro College.

SAL placed boxes around campus for students, faculty and staff to drop off the items. They also reached out to El Centro College employees to create student incentives that might help increase student participation.

In the end, all of their hard work paid off, thanks to you! The SAL Chapter of El Centro College would like to thank everyone who donated, including a special thank you to the faculty members who allowed SAL members to visit the classroom and promote the canned food drive to students during class time. This interaction made a huge difference in helping the hungry in Dallas. Together we are El Centro Strong!
