Jennifer Pereyda
2008 - 2009 Awardee

First of all, college is not easy. I am a single parent who returned to school after 15 years. My name is Jennifer, and this is the challenge I face while pursuing my education.

I knew I was going to have trouble with my classes and terrified I was going to fail. After my first academic year, I found out about the many scholarships the college had to offer. I felt a weight had been lifted off my shoulders when I found no need to question whether or not I could go to school this semester. I cannot afford to hire my private tutor; there are even times I cannot afford books or the Internet for my computer.

I plan on taking what I know now to an even higher level. Ultimately, I want a doctorate in sociology and social work. Along with my journey, I will probably work in a social service setting: preferably a nonprofit. My long-term goal is to own and operate a non-profit organization benefiting and empowering impoverished women or families.

In 10 years, I hope to have completed my doctorate be married and own a home. I have had collectively pursued enough grant monies and sponsors to have my first center erected. It is my obligation as a human being to care for my fellow man, share in his or her grief, and love them when no other will.

I will go wherever God leads me to do His will for the people. If called to South America, South Asia, or South Carolina, I would gladly go because love has no boundaries. I am a gem of an asset, and I know my potential.
