Admission Process

What does this mean?

Once a year, Mountain View College will admit approximately 12-14 students beginning in the fall semester.

Courses:

Pre-Requisites with a minimum 2.50 GPA (must be complete before applying). 

Acceptance Criteria:

Total points are calculated by a formula.  Please refer to the OTA application packet for the formula. 


Application to the Associate Degree Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Program requires:

 

  • Application and current admission to a Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) campus.
  • Complete the four prerequisite courses with a minimum grade point average of 2.50 or higher on those specific courses. All courses must have a C or better grade.
  • Submission of a complete application packet to the OTA department during the designated filing period.


1. General Admission Requirements to the College

Applicants to the Associate Degree OTA program must meet college admission requirements in the Dallas County Community College District as outlined in the official Mountain View College Admission website (http://www.mountainviewcollege.edu/apply-reg/Pages/AdmRegOff.aspx). Applicants must have earned either a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) in addition to complying with Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirements before they will be eligible to apply to the program. Students should consult the college advising office to determine their TSI status prior to application to the OTA program.

Once the student is admitted to a Dallas County Community College, the student may apply to the OTA program after the student has completed the following requirements:

2.  Prerequisite Courses

Applicants must complete the four prerequisite courses listed below with a minimum grade point average of 2.75 or higher to submit an application to the OTA program.  Prerequisite courses include:

  • ENGL 1301    English Composition
  • PSYC 2301     General Psychology
  • BIOL 2401      Anatomy & Physiology 1 (BIOL 1401 Prereq for BIOL 2401)
  • One (3-hour credit) in Humanities/Fine Arts Elective (*must be selected from the AAS Nursing Options for Humanities/Fine Arts)

Science course BIOL 2401 must be completed less than 5 years prior to anticipated program entrance. BIOL 1406 is the prerequisite for BIOL 2401.

 

3. Official College Transcripts

Prior to application to the OTA program, potential applicants must have submitted all of their official transcripts to the Registrar/Admissions Office at one of the seven Dallas County Community College District campuses. The transcripts must be current with the print date no earlier than three years of the applicant's anticipated admission to a health occupations program. If the official transcripts have not been submitted to the OTA office or to Ms. Rebecca Soto (in MVC Enrollment office), the individual's application to the program will be voided.

4. Meet physical and mental standards for admission (see OTA Application form).

5. Schedule an appointment with a college admissions advisor for pre-evaluation and transcript review.

6. Complete all required immunizations & TB testing.

7. Hold a current CPR for "Health Care Provider" level certificate.

8. Has a negative background check submitted with OTA application and a negative drug test screening. (Conducted once the student has been approved for the program but before classes are started.  Students subjected to random drug and alcohol testing.  Positive test results are immediate dismissal from OTA program)

9. Proof of medical insurance.

10. Complete and submit all required paperwork.


Other Considerations for Admission:

In addition to completing the above requirements and application, the student should consider the rigorous physical and mental demands of occupational therapy career which are needed in order to accomplish the objectives of the OTA program.  The OTA applicant must possess: 

  1. A valid social security number.
  2. Visual acuity with or without corrective lenses. This is needed for but is not limited to patient intervention, assessments, reading the small print, visualizing and interpreting monitors, and equipment calibrations.
  3. Hearing ability with or without auditory aids to understand the normal speaking voice without viewing the speaker's face.  This is needed for but is not limited to hearing monitor alarms, emergency signals, and call bells from patients, and stethoscopic sounds originating from the patient's blood vessels, heart, lungs, and abdomen. 
  4. Physical ability to stand for prolonged periods of time and a reasonable ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.  This is needed for but is not limited to performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, safely lifting patients, moving from room to room, maneuvering in small spaces, and completing eight-hour shifts.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively in orally, aurally, and in writing.  This is needed for but is not limited to the ability to speak clearly and understandable to members of the healthcare team, patients, and families.  The student must possess the ability to write legibly and professionally in the patient's chart or legal documentation and the ability to use effective listening skills.
  6. Manual dexterity, strength, and fine motor skills.  This is needed for performing other OTA procedures and/or skills.
  7. Reliable personal transportation and the ability to attend all classroom and clinical experiences, both on and off campus.
  8. A normal level of health and immunity.  Has the ability to tolerate immunizations and to work with a wide variety of potentially contagious patients.
  9. Eligibility to meet the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) and Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners Requirements.  This includes but is not limited to passing a criminal background check and drug and alcohol screening.  (Please be aware that some criminal history or psychiatric illnesses may preclude an individual from licensure eligibility.)  Some clinical sites or health care facilities may have more stringent rules regarding citizenship, which may preclude non-citizens from completing those clinical experiences.
  10. Ability to function safely and professionally under various stressful conditions.
