DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

Family Involvement for Latino Success in College: A Family-Centered and Community-Based Approach to Latino Student Access, Persistence, and Retention

The goal of the 2006-2009 Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) grant is to increase Latino student access, persistence, and retention through participating community colleges.  To do this, the colleges design and implement innovative family-centered and community-based projects.  Such projects include credit college courses, and educational activities on campus and in Latino communities in Dallas County.  Information about the FIPSE program and its progress will be disseminated to colleges and universities serving Latino populations.

The Family Involvement Model (FIM) is an important component of the FIPSE grant.  This model provides opportunities for family members to participate in the students’ college experience.  Some of the activities would include sitting in on classroom lectures and attending cultural events.  The idea is to create an environment for family members to gain a better understanding of the students’ education and offer support.

During the months of February and March 2010, the "Family Involvement for Latino Success in College" grant will sponsor four special guest speakers at Mountain View College:

Mr. Olanrewaju Folarin, speaking on "Perspectives of families in Africa"

Mr. Leo Barron Hicks, speaking on "Effects of prison industry on Black families"

During February and March 2010 project administrators and faculty will be presenting "Partnering with Families for Student Success", an interactive presentation featuring professional high definition videos at conferences for TACHE, College Board Preparate, and the League for Innovation in the Community College.  Participants will also receive valuable resources to assist in replicating this Best Practices Family Involvement Model.

In August 2009 the DCCCD awarded a 2009-2011 retention award grant to a project inspired by the success of the current "Family Involvement for Latino Success in College" grant.  This grant, known as FAME (Family Approach for Mathematics in Education), will sponsor DMAT classes at Mountain View and Eastfield Colleges.  Its goal is to increase student success and retention by first-time-in-college developmental mathematics students by designing and implementing instruction-based family-centered projects in college credit developmental math.

The "Family Involvement for Latino Success in College" project has been recognized by the Dallas County Community College District as a "Best Practices" Program.
