DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

Family Involvement for Latino Success in College: A Family-Centered and Community-Based Approach to Latino Student Access, Persistence, and Retention

The goal of the 2006-2009 Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) grant is to increase Latino student access, persistence, and retention through participating community colleges.  To do this, the colleges design and implement innovative family-centered and community-based projects.  Such projects include credit college courses, and educational activities on campus and in Latino communities in Dallas County.  Information about the FIPSE program and its progress will be disseminated to colleges and universities serving Latino populations.

The Family Involvement Model (FIM) is an important component of the FIPSE grant.  This model provides opportunities for family members to participate in the students’ college experience.  Some of the activities would include sitting in on classroom lectures and attending cultural events.  The idea is to create an environment for family members to gain a better understanding of the students’ education and offer support.
