Dr. Quentin Wright
Mountain View College had a successful first year of the Quality Enhancement Plan initiative. Following a good report from the SACS visiting team in September, the committee immediately began implementing the planned activities relating to the purpose and goals of the QEP.
The overall purpose of the QEP is to increase the graduation rate of former Developmental Writing students. In a strong first step, twenty one writing intensive, QEP-Enhanced, and English Honors course sections were offered in fall 2013. Of the students in these courses that were formerly in Developmental Writing, nearly 70% successfully completed and were retained in the spring.
In addition to this purpose, the QEP has three goals. The first is to have students master writing principles. To assess this goal, a sample of student papers was taken from the fall QEP sections. An interdisciplinary writing assessment team along with University of North Texas in Dallas English Professor, Dr. Cindy King, is currently evaluating the sample. The results will be revealed within the next edition of the QEP newsletter available during return week.
Goal two is to increase the amount of student writing in core courses. The QEP committee proudly announces that fifteen additional faculty members from seven different disciplines will begin teaching QEP courses in the fall. This will bring the total number of faculty participating to twenty-eight members coming from eleven different disciplines.
The third goal of the QEP is to create a culture of writing at MVC. The Culture of Writing QEP subcommittee members, James Behan, Darius Frasure, and Kevin Williams coordinated the first annual QEP Writing Festival. This four day event featured poetry, art, and writing workshops. University of North Texas in Dallas Academic Dean, Gloria Bahamon, described the week as a joyous occasion for students, staff, and the community.
Year one was a successful, and year two will be even better. The QEP committee extends its deepest appreciation to the entire college for all of the support.
