The Common Book committee is pleased to announce One Amazing Thing by Chitra Divakaruni as this year's selection for Fall 2013‑ Spring 2014 common book for Mountain View College. We are excited to have the author visit our campus for two author's lectures on October 8, 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the MVC Performance Hall.
Other events planned for this season include a story telling workshop, a discussion on stereotypes, book club discussions, a writing contest, a chance to video record yourself telling your own amazing thing in the MVC Common Book Story Booth, a collaborative community art exhibit where everyone is invited to add to the art exhibit, and so much more!
As part of our initiative to provide activities that engage the students, employees and greater community in the collective experience of reading and discussing a common text the Common Book project this season will endeavor in the new experience of collaborating with another DCCCD college, Eastfield College, who has also adopted One Amazing Thing as their Common Book. Together our colleges will collaborate in offering events such as campus book discussions and will have a healthy competition in order to raise funds for Red Cross. We call this relationship, "One Amazing Alliance" and hope our efforts create amazing experiences for the participants.
The Common Book project was created to promote an atmosphere of shared learning at Mountain View College. Through the sharing of a book, we hope other shared experiences of learning flourish throughout the college and beyond. The Common Book committee, staff and faculty of Mountain View College work tirelessly to plan and offer events and activities related to the common book that will engage students' critical thinking and entice Dallas residents to come see what our college has to offer.
We welcome you to join us in taking part in reading and participating in our schedule of events this semester and hope you find a renewed love for reading and rejuvenated passion for learning!
