Mountain View College’s Common Book Committee is pleased to announce the Fall 2015 Common Book selection, Into the Beautiful North
by Luis Alberto Urrea. We are excited to have the author visit our campus for an author’s lecture and book signing. Other events planned for this season include, but are not limited to: a screening of the classic movie The Magnificent Seven
, a student summit led by SGA, a Folklórico performance, and more!
In Into the Beautiful North
, nineteen-year-old Nayeli works at a taco shop in her Mexican village and dreams about her father, who journeyed to the U.S. to find work. Recently, it has dawned on her that he isn't the only man who has left town. In fact, there are almost no men in the village—they’ve all gone north. While watching The Magnificent Seven
, Nayeli decides to go north herself and recruit seven men; her own "Siete Magníficos"—to repopulate her hometown and protect it from the bandidos who plan on taking it over.
We welcome you to join us in taking part in reading the Common Book, and participating in our schedule of events this semester in order to contemplate the influences of America's culture on many of her southern brothers and sisters, and the rich heritage that they, likewise, weave into the American tapestry.-Professor Jessica Waldrop and Professor Lisa Jackson, Common Book Committee Co-Chairs
