The Physicists is a satiric drama fueled by the political and tumultuous environment of World War II in the shadow of the awesome and destructive powers of the atomic and hydrogen bombs. A drawing room within the oldest building of a sanitorium connects three sick rooms of three mentally ill patients. One believes he is Einstein, another he is Sir Isaac Newton, and one realizes his identity but supposes he is visited by the spirit of King Solomon. As the curtain rises on this dark dramatic work, “Einstein” has just killed one of the nurses, which is the second murder of its kind in only three months. As an inspector attempts to uncover the facts, the founder of the home, Fräulein Doktor Mathilde Von Zahnd , enters the action and proves to be the only suspect who appears truly unstable. Things are further complicated when she reveal s to know more than what she has previously pretended. In an ingenious set of plot twists and clever dramatic situations, Dürrenmatt deals with questions of scientific ethics and mankind's ability to handle its intellectual responsibilities to the survival of our species.
